In an industry that has been more than a little shaky in the past year, U.S. Bank takes pride in its consistencies.

In fact, the bank has even been recognized on a national scale for its recent performance. The April issue of Fortune magazine recognized U.S. Bank as one of the most admired companies in the world, while the U.S. Department of Defense gave the company a Patriot Award for support of its employees in the National Guard and Reserve Forces.

Even with these honors, customer service is still truly the highest goal for U.S. Bank. This commitment was reflected further when it topped the four largest banks in the country in customer satisfaction, customer expectations, perceived quality, perceived value and customer loyalty, according to an independent survey conducted by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

That's a pretty high compliment to the fifth-largest commercial bank in the country, and it's one they don't take lightly.

"The biggest area that we focus on is customer service," says Senior Vice President Toby Rau. "We do customer surveys across categories. Our strategic goal is to be the best in customer service among our peer group during the financial crisis."

To stay ahead of the game during the recession, U.S. Bank has tried to be reliable in its approach. This required providing as much information as possible to customers, filling them in on what was happening in the industry and how that would affect them.

The transparency has left customers satisfied while also benefiting the bank. Consistency has led it to grow the balance sheet.

"We've been able to provide more services than before. U.S. Bank is one of the only banks that has stayed in a lot of markets when most are moving out of them, such as merchant banking. We continue to invest in growth," Rau says.

This has paid off on a national scale, but has done even better for the local branch of U.S. Bank. Its local commercial banking unit has grown at an even higher rate than the company has nationally.

"We've been called upon a lot," Rau says. "And we've been able to answer."
