Health Care Summit Provides Opportunity to Address Questions
More than 300 local business people listened as a panel of experts discussed the future of healthcare at the Health Care Summit at the Sharonville Convention Center. The third annual event was presented by Cincy and the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance. Other sponsors were Humana, HORAN, the Dry Cleaning Shop and ITA Audio Visual Solutions. The panelists were Doug Watts, vice president and CFO of the Metalworking Group, a small employer dealing with rising health costs; Dr. Barbara Tobias, a family physician and medical director of the Health Collaborative, which is leading physicians' practice initiatives; Dr. Kevin Joseph, president and CEO of West Chester Hospital. Dr. Derek van Amerongen, vice president and chief medical officer for Humana of Ohio, moderated the breakfast event.
PowerNet Global Celebrates 20 Years
PowerNet Global celebrated 20 years in the telecommunications industry in October at the Savannah Center in West Chester. The Fairfield-based company, which has been family owned and operated since its inception, is a provider of communications solutions to residential and commercial customers across the nation.
YMCA Salutes Achievers
The 34th annual YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Black and Latino Achievers Salute Gala was held in November at the Sharonville Convention Center. Ten outstanding students were awarded college scholarships and 34 Adult Achievers helped lead college and career workshops. Toyota executive Corey Clark of Independence, Ky., was named the Adult Achiever of the Year, while Monroe High School/Butler Tech senior Maria Dongo was named the Teen Achiever of the Year.
AAF, Ad2 Honor Sales Reps
Professionalism, customer service, negotiation skills and ability to close the deal were the standards for the first annual Suit Awards by the American Advertising Federation of Cincinnati and Ad2 Cincinnati in November. Winners were named in 17 categories. Cincy was the official media sponsor, Veritas Training Group was a program sponsor and First Watch was a supporting sponsor.
Best of the North Finalists Honored at Mason’s Manor House
At Cincy’s inaugural Best of the North celebration, more than 600 guests partied, ate and rocked to the music of DJ E. The event was held at the Manor House in Mason on Oct. 4. At the end of the evening, guests were invited to cast their votes for the Best of the North in 68 categories — from pre-schools to parks, restaurants to hair salons, pet care to kitchen remodeling and more. Vendors filled two large ballrooms to showcase why they are the best of the best. Guests enjoyed food samples from sushi and steak to ice cream sundaes. Winners will be announced in an upcoming issue of Cincy. The West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance was a partner in the event, and sponsors included Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital, Lyons & Lyons and Bishop Fenwick High School.
Cedar Village Golf Classic
The Cedar Village Golf Classic in August at the Heritage Club in Mason benefited residents of Cedar Village. Presenting sponsors were Gerald and Nancy Robinson; Spring Valley Bank; Marvin and Betsy Schwartz; and TOPICZ.
Chance to Test Drive a Maserati
Tristaters were invited to drive the new Maserati models and enjoy a bit of nosh at the Christian Moerlein Lager House on a gorgeous day — perfect for “top down” motoring along the riverfront. Cris Collinsworth was seen sinking into the lush leather seats of the GranTurismo Convertible Sport. “The test drive captured my imagination immediately as we accelerated through the concrete canyon of Fort Washington Way and up onto Columbia Parkway,” said Bill Kief, president of the local Porsche Club.  Representatives from Maserati North America were on hand to coach drivers in the technical features, many of which are developments pioneered by Maserati’s corporate stablemate Scuderia Ferrari on the Formula One circuit. Maserati of Cincinnati displays, sells and services the Italian machines at their state-of-the-art facility in Mariemont.
Cincy Honors 11 Business Women as Athena Finalists
Eleven women leaders who, while achieving success in education, medicine, the arts and business, mentor young women and work tirelessly on behalf of the community, were honored by Cincy as finalists for the 2012 Athena Awards. Zeinab Schwen, president of Strategic Regulatory Consulting, received the award at a lunch at Xavier University’s Cintas Center. Community partners were eWomenNetwork, West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance and Junior League of Cincinnati. Sponsors were Stock Yards Bank & Trust, Great Oaks Career Campuses and Keating Muething & Klekamp (KMK Law). Emcee Sheree Paolello, the WLW-TV Channel 5 news anchor, said she looks forward to the event every year because these women are an inspiration.
Dusty’s in Fashion
Blaine’s Fine Men’s Apparel kicked off its fall fashion preview with a special guest — Dusty Baker, manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Blaine’s, which features both European and traditional designers, business casual wear and made-to measure clothing, had representatives from some of its suppliers in the store for the event, but the main draw was the three-time National League Manager of the Year. Baker, who led the Reds to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons, stopped by the store in Olde Montgomery to chat with customers about two things that interest many men: baseball and clothes.
Helping St. Aloysius

U.S. Bank in Cincinnati donated 160 backpacks filled with school supplies to the students of St. Aloysius, 4721 Reading Road. In 2010 and 2011, U.S. Bank committed more than $11.4 million of permanent financing for the renovation of St. Aloysius’ facility in Bond Hill. In addition, last year, U.S. Bank awarded St. Aloysius a $10,000 grant. The bank’s employees contributed nearly 1,300 volunteer hours at nonprofit organizations in 2011.

Humana Foundation Recognizes Organizations for Community Work
The Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana, Inc., hosted a gala celebration Sept. 27 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza to honor three local nonprofit organizations. ProKids, a local agency that works to ensure foster children are safe and that their needs are met, received a $100,000 Humana Communities Benefit grant. Hoxworth and People Working Cooperatively received $7,500 grants.

Business is booming in Montgomery and officials celebrated with back-to-back ribbon cuttings at First Financial Bank and Jet’s Pizza.
Nutcracker Gala
Cincinnati Ballet CEO and Artistic Director Victoria Morgan praised the honorary chair of the Nutcracker Gala Kay Geiger as an inspiring and dynamic leader at December event at the Phoenix Restaurant. Geiger, regional president of PNC Bank, responded by thanking Morgan for the creativity and spirit she brings to the city’s arts community through her leadership at the prestigious dance company. Maizyalet Velázquez and Patric Palkens performed. Rotary Talk
Eric Harmon, publisher and president of NKY and Cincy magazines, was the guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Kenton County at Colonial Cottage in Erlanger. The club, a combination of the original Rotary Club of Erlanger and Rotary Club of Fort Mitchell, provides scholastic scholarships for Kenton County senior high school students for $2,500 and $1,000, and works to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and build goodwill and peace in the world.
Salute to Education
The 2012 CISE Campaign Kickoff Celebration for donors, students and staff was held at Great American Ball Park with more than 300 guests supporting the Catholic Inner-city Schools Education Fund. Brian Patrick was master of ceremonies. Archbishop Dennis Schnurr honored Bob and Carmen Hodge with the Faith in Education Award for outstanding support of the CISE Fund. Harry Santen presented Jean Coleman from St. Francis de Sales School with the Harry Santen Distinguished Educator Award for teaching excellence.
Sharonville Golf Outing

The Sharonville Chamber of Commerce 18th Annual Golf Classic, held at Four Bridges Country Club, was another sellout. Golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf, a lunch buffet catered by Blue Goose Sports Cafe followed by a prime rib dinner in the Four Bridges dining room, two raffles, a silent auction and a live auction. Premier sponsors were PNC Bank, Rumpke, the Utilities Group, Blue Goose, Saxon Financial, Jake Sweeney, and Holiday Inn I-275 North.

United Way Sets $61 Million Goal
At United Way of Greater Cincinnati’s 2012 Campaign Kickoff on Fountain Square, Campaign Chair David Joyce, president and CEO, GE Aviation, announced a goal of $61 million. He urged the crowd to take bold leadership to raise money and engage volunteers.
Warren County Career Center Adult Education Open House

More than 50 business and community leaders attended the Warren County Career Center Adult Education Open House and Job Fair Aug. 8 at the agency in Lebanon. The center offers a wide range comprehensive programs with advanced technological capabilities, modern equipment and skilled instructors.

Barrett Vision Award
Chris Frutkin, chief executive officer of City Center Properties, was presented the 2012 John F. Barrett Vision Award by the Entrepreneurs’ Organization of Cincinnati at a gala at Lytle Park. Chris Frutkin “is an outstanding entrepreneur who truly embodies the entrepreneurial vision and spirit of Cincinnati in its evolution as a world class city — the essence of the John F. Barrett Vision Award,” says Mark Schmidt, president of EO Cincinnati.
Making the Connection
The Hamilton County Park District celebrated the final phase of the Otto Armleder Memorial Park development with the opening of the 1.1 mile paved trail in Linwood that connects to the Lunken Field 5-mile loop. It will eventually be part of two regional trail systems, the Little Miami Scenic Trail and the Ohio River Trail.
Suites that Rock
Raising money ($250,000 in five years) for the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center is one seriously profitable bit of volunteering. Scores of business leaders spent months preparing for the two sold-out performances of “Suits That Rock” with music from Foreigner to Rick James, the Beatles to The Who. Lawyers, CEOs, educators and engineers stash their briefcases and unleash their musical alter egos and the audience dances in the aisles.
The Everest Award
West Chester Liberty Township Chamber Alliance celebrated The Everest Award honoring Leaders & Legends on the I-75 Growth Corridor.  The event focused on marketing the emerging global economic center along I-75 with a spotlight on the people who have helped shape it. The honorees are Lawrence Schumacher, Schumacher Dugan Construction; Rajesh K. Soin, Soin International; and James L. Wainscott, AK Steel Corporation. The award was designed by Pattie Byron of West Chester to symbolize the climb to the top of Mt. Everest and the heights each honoree has achieved. 
Bike & Build
On June 12, 30 young adults with Bike & Build Inc., a national nonprofit committed to affordable housing, biked into Cincinnati on their journey across the U.S. On their stop, they worked to help construction efforts on Chatham Street with Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity.
CSO Pops Summer Concert Series
On June 8, guests gathered for an evening of music and fun at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra & Pops Summer Concert Series at Miami Whitewater Forest, a Hamilton County Park. The CSO Pops Summer Concert Series took place at Otterbein Lifestyles Community in Lebanon.
LOTH Ribbon Cutting

The June ribbon cutting celebrated the opening of LOTH's newly renovated Resource Center. LOTH welcomed customers, suppliers and guests to show what exactly it is that they do, which is provide tools to help their customers become more efficient. The new Resource Center allows customers to see options and examine similar case studies for clients that have made real estate and space planning decisions within their industry.

YVCA Salute to Career Women of Achievement Luncheon
On May 9, eight outstanding Cincinnati career women and two inspiring scholars were honored at the 33rd annual YWCA Salute to Career Women of Achievement Luncheon at the Duke Energy Convention Center before a crowd of 2,030. Proceeds from the luncheon event directly support the critical YWCA programs serving more than 35,000 women and their families community-wide.
2012 MANNY Awards
Since 2006, Cincy magazine’s MANNY Awards have celebrated the contributions the manufacturing industry makes to the Greater Cincinnati community and economy. Winners were honored at the MANNY Awards Banquet at the Sharonville Convention Center, which featured Pete Zelinski, senior editor of Modern Machine Shop Magazine, and Dan Hurley, Director of Leadership Cincinnati, as keynote speakers. BRAVO! at Club B
Cincinnati Ballet’s BRAVO! volunteers hosted friends and supporters at Club B at the Hilton Netherland Plaza with dancing, music, food and a silent auction to raise money for dancers, scenery, design and maintenance of costumes, choreography and music. Carmon DeLeone and the Studio Quintet performed. BRAVO! chairs are Kathryn Harsh and Susan Shelton. Club B chairs are Susan Grayson Hill and Mona Foad.
Go Red Luncheon For Heart Health
Nearly 700 guests attended the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Luncheon at the Duke Energy Convention Center. The luncheon was presented by The Christ Hospital. Cincy magazine was a media sponsor.
Miami Valley Christian Academy Field Day
While the weather wasn’t cooperative, the Miami Valley Christian Academy’s “Fun Day” activities for kindergarten through 6th grade students were still held in full-force indoors. Students, staff and volunteers celebrated the end of school and the beginning of summer.
Shred to Stop Scams
Cincinnati Better Business Bureau partnered with Document Destruction; Hamilton County Coalition to Stop Scams, Fraud and Abuse; University of Cincinnati; WCPO and WKMV for a shredding event at UC Blue Ash. Attendees brought documents to be shredded and old cell phones to be recycled.
Cincy Honors 2012 Tristate Success Winners
On April 24, business leaders gathered at the Sharonville Convention Center for Cincy’s Tristate Success Awards to discuss the growth and successes of Tristate businesses and to honor the most successful and consistent companies in the region. President and CEO of Western & Southern Financial Group John Barrett was the keynote speaker. Sponsors included Humana, First Financial Bank and Loth. Partners included Northern Kentucky Tri-Ed, OKI Regional Council of Governments and the Sharonville Chamber of Commerce.
Clermont Chamber Business Expo
The National Bank and Trust/Clermont Chamber Business Expo brought more than 700 people to the Oasis Center for a luncheon featuring LaRosa’s CEO Mike LaRosa, booths showcasing local businesses, small business workshops by UC Clermont College, and a SBDC Business Financing Forum.

Scholarship Honors Knippenberg
A journalism scholarship at the University of Cincinnati honoring the late Jim Knippenberg has been fully endowed after just two fundraisers. Jerry Springer, Norma Rashid, Ken Broo and Pat Barry — the top-rated WLWT news team of 1984-1993 — headlined an April event at the Celestial in Mount Adams, which pushed donations to the $50,000 total. Knippenberg, a columnist at The Enquirer and later at Cincy, taught at UC, his alma mater.
2012 Fight for Air Climb
On Feb. 19, the American Lung Association hosted its seventh annual climb at the Carew Tower. Novice and expert athletes, local firefighters and families made up the nearly 650 climbers who participated to raise $135,000 to support the fight against lung disease.
ADDY Awards
The 33rd annual Cincinnati ADDY Awards were held at The Carnegie Arts Center in Covington, Ky. on Feb. 18. Gold sponsors included Mills James and Crest Graphics, while silver sponsors were Eric Mower and Associates and Wood Herron & Evans.
UC Students Compete
The University of Cincinnati Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research announced 16 semi-finalists from across North America who competed for $20,000 in prizes in the eighth annual Spirit of Enterprise Graduate Business Plan Competition on Feb. 24.

Cancer Society Honors Mark Weber
The 7th Annual Cincinnati Golf Classic for the American Cancer Society at the Kenwood Country Club was sponsored by PNC Bank and Duke Realty. This event raised money to “create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.” Blue Ash Mayor Mark F. Weber, a cancer survivor, was honored.
Cedar Village Golf Classic
Perfect weather for the 12th Annual Cedar Village Golf Classic was enjoyed by 142 golfers at Wetherington Golf and Country Club. Presenting sponsors were Jerry and Nancy Robinson, Spring Valley Bank, Marvin and Betsy Schwartz, as well as TOPICZ. Funds will be used for the new Rehabilitation Center, which opened in July.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
More than 12,000 walkers raised $600,000 at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The route went through Newport and downtown Cincinnati.
NARI Explores Tile Installation
National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI) Ohio Valley Chapter hosted a membership meeting at the Sharonville showroom of Hamilton Parker with experts on tile installation, underlayment, waterproofing and grout for business owners, managers, sales professionals and other members.
Cincy Magazine Celebrates ATHENA® Awards
Cincy honored 11 successful businesswomen as finalists at the annual ATHENA Award ceremony for leadership and blazing trails for younger women. Annie Ruth, educator and artist, was the recipient of the award. Sponsors included Great Oaks, Stock Yards Bank & Trust and Cincinnati Eye Institute. The Junior League of Cincinnati, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, eWomen’s Network and Women of Excellence were community partners.
Golf Classic Benefits StarShine
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center hosted a Golf Classic at Western Hills Country Club to benefit its StarShine Hospice, the only hospice program in the area dedicated exclusively to children. Last year, the event raised more than $96,000.

Spectacular Italian automobiles and great food by chef Dan Knecht was the perfect combination for almost 600 car aficionados at the “A Taste of Italy” event at Maserati of Cincinnati.
Sharonville Convention Center Honors 10,000th Host
Hospice of Cincinnati was honored by the Sharonville Convention Center as the 10,000th organization to host an event at the facility. The reward was no charge for the event.
Success Roundtable
The 4th Annual Success Roundtable, hosted by TechSolve, featured Cincy Magazine’s Manny Award winners MAG Industrial Automation Systems, Mazak and Formica. Also, Jim Russell, regional investment manager of U.S. Bank, spoke on anticipated economic conditions, and Dr. Chuck Matthews, executive director of the UC Center for Entrepreneurship, spoke on the state of manufacturing in the Tristate.
Weiland Honored At Peace of the City Event
Richard (Dick) Weiland was honored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service at the Peace of the City Dinner. Weiland has worked for decades to support social services. He currently serves on more than 30 boards and commissions.
Winter Wonderettes Opening Performance
Thompson Hine LLP hosted a private event on the opening night performance of the Winter Wonderettes at the Ensemble Theatre.
Blue Ash Business Party
Fun at the annual Blue Ash Business Appreciation Party included live music, food tasting and beer samples. The event was held at Blue Ash Recreation Center.  
Clermont Chamber Expo
Bob Castellini, owner and CEO of the Cincinnati Reds, headlined the luncheon at the Clermont Chamber Business and Community Expo. In addition to exhibits featuring members of the Clermont Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and regional businesses, the expo included the Clermont Experience Taste with samples from area restaurants and caterers.
The Kenwood Open House
City of Cincinnati officials welcomed The Kenwood, a senior living community by Senior Star, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 16-story, 288-unit community offers a luxury spa complex, fitness center, valet and gourmet dining options. The grand opening included a donation of $30,000 to four non-profit organizations.
UC Day Celebration
The UC Day celebration featured several awards from the Alumni Association.
Wellington Orthopaedic Location Grand Opening
Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine celebrated the grand opening of their state-of-the-art 19,000 square-foot facility in the Western Ridge medical campus just off I-74 at the Rybolt Road exit.

Employees and relatives of DeVore Roofing celebrated Mother's Day with a Mary DeVore Championship golf competition at Brown's Run Country Club in Middletown.
Rockwern Academy Tribute Dinner
The Rockwern Academy Tribute Dinner and Silent Auction was attended by nearly 500 community leaders, parents, teachers, former students and supporters of Jewish Day School education. The silent auction raised more than $300,000 for the school. The gathering was held to honor the Guttman family, whose members have long supported the academy and Jewish education.
2011 Manny Awards

Rose Awards
The Rose Awards recognize Greater Cincinnati's frontline and service employees who provide excellence beyond the call of duty. The event was held at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza and hosted by the Tourism Council of Greater Cincinnati.
Fundraising New Orleans Style
Redwood Express hosted a fundraising event with “Big Easy” fun, including a Bourbon Street bourbon tasting and Mardi Gras-themed entertainment. Located in Fort Mitchell, Ky., Redwood provides services and support for children and adults with multiple and severe disabilities to help them to live independent and full lives.

Tristate Success Awards 2011
Cincy's Tristate Success Awards honored regional businesses that grew in revenue and employees over the past year. Keynote speaker Bob McDonald, president, chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble, discussed the role of business in "touching and improving lives" around the world. Held at the Cintas Center at Xavier University and attended by almost 300 professionals, the event served as an opportunity to network and celebrate success. Wellington Blue Ribbon Expansion
Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine hosted a ribbon cutting to showcase its newly expanded facility in Eastgate. The updated office grew from 11,000 to 18,725 square feet. It will be home to 11 physicians specializing in orthopedic care and sports medicine.
Climb for AIr
Teams and individuals, including firefighters in full gear, competed in a "vertical road race" up 45 flights and 804 steps to the top of Carew Tower, downtown. The fifth annual Tribute to Veterans, "War Through the Eyes of the Caregivers," was held on Veterans Day at Xavier University's Cintas Center benefiting the Disabled Veterans of America, the Thank You Foundation and the Thank America First Foundation. Unsung Hero Award
Everybody knows one — a co-worker with a great work ethic who gets the job done in a cheerful and efficient manner. The Unsung Hero Award & Scholarship inaugural event in February at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College recognized a dozen tireless workers, raised scholarship money and put the spotlight on Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Program.
